Day 3 - We have a daughter!

Gotcha Day!
We have our daughter! Right now she is asleep in her little hotel provided crib and it’s all still so surreal….
The day started with a three hour flight to Guangzhou, and as we rode to the hotel our guide informed us that we would get our daughters in a couple of hours. After rushing to the hotel, gathering our paperwork and a diaper, we rushed off to an adoption office building a few minutes away.
Our group of five families met up with a couple of other groups. On our way to our waiting room we caught a glimpse of a roomful of babies and Doug said that he could see Maylie. We waited and they brought the babies in one at a time. When they called our name we talked a little to Maylie before they put her in my arms. She seemed to melt right into my arms and put her head on my shoulder. It was amazing. She cried in tiny little bursts and really seemed to be trying to hold it together- lots of silent big crocodile tears. I passed her to Doug and she didn’t cry much. At first she seemed very lethargic and tired. The nannies and babies had made a seven hour bus ride so they were already out of sorts. But as we sat down with her she became more and more alert and looked around and was watching everyone and everything. She seems very observant. The lady who handed Maylie to us was the orphanage director and she came by to kiss Maylie specifically goodbye before leaving. On the bus to our hotel Maylie cried and then fell asleep. She woke up in the hotel room and screamed for about five minutes while Doug and I tired to figure out how to make her bottle "Chinese" style. Very thick, very hot. We didn’t do a good job because she didn’t drink it but she didn’t complain either.
She seemed to be coping by withdrawing or "shutting down" but her eyes followed us everywhere we went and she wanted me to hold her- she clung to me and seemed afraid. Then later, we went down to another family’s room and Doug was holding her and bouncing her and she started giggling! What a wonderful sound and how reassuring to see a bit of her personality. She giggled and giggled, I made another bottle (the RIGHT way) she drank it, and fell asleep.
Whew…. Aren’t really words to describe this whole day. Exciting, of course, but also overwhelming and frightening. She is a little doll… as cute as can be. She can sit, and we think, crawl a little. She has two bottom teeth and a lot more hair then her pictures. See how sleepy our little sweetie was?
Please continue to pray for energy. We have three official appointments tomorrow and as wonderful as this trip has been so far it’s been go go go everyday.
